Petition to the San Francisco Mayor & Board of Supervisors
Dear Mayor and members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors:
-
LGBTQ+ bars and clubs should be safe and protected community gathering places, but many have outdoor patios or partially enclosed indoor spaces where smoking is allowed, exposing patrons and workers to harmful secondhand smoke.
-
LGBTQ+ adults use tobacco products almost twice as much due to stress from homophobia and transphobia. Most want to quit and smoke-free spaces help them meet that goal.
-
1 in 3 young adults in Alameda and San Francisco counties are exposed to secondhand smoke on the job. These workers are disproportionately low-income and Latin.
-
Air quality on LGBTQ+ bar patios in San Francisco has been measured in the EPA standard “Hazardous” range.
-
Smoking kills more people every year than AIDS, alcohol, illegal drugs, murder, suicide, and traffic accidents combined.
Please take this information into account as you consider ways to protect the health of LGBTQ+ and other San Francisco residents.
